Medpolymer OJSC is the first industrial enterprise for the production of medical devices in the USSR, traces its history back to the artificial teeth and dental cements factory of the Leningrad Lomonosov Factory. Founded by the Order of the RSFSR People's Commissariat for Health on December 17,1935, and began operations on April 16, 1937.

During the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945), the factory did not cease operations and mastered production of machine gun parts for the army.

In 1946 the factory was handed to the General Directorate of the Drugs Industry of the Ministry of Medical Industry, and in 1947 it was renamed into Leningrad Union Plant of Dental Materials of the Ministry of Health of USSR.

In 1946 the factory was handed to the General Directorate of the Drugs Industry of the Ministry of Medical Industry, and in 1947 it was renamed into Leningrad Union Plant of Dental Materials of the Ministry of Health of USSR.

In 1970, the factory was renamed as Leningrad Factory of Medical Polymers.

In 1975 the Factory was the first to produce sterile, disposable syringes in the USSR.

 

In 1987 Lenmedpolymer production association was established based on the factory, then it was reorganized into Lenmedpolymer company in 1992 and reincorporated as a joint-stock company in the same year. In 1993, the company was renamed as Medpolymer joint-stock company of the open type. Since 1996, the company was named Medpolymer OJSC

The factory is constantly expanding its product range and implement state-of-the-art technologies:

— In 1979 the second production phase of devices for blood and solution transfusions is introduced, and mass production of disposable endotracheal tubes, ureteral catheters and other polymeric products has been introduced under license from the British PORTEX Company;

— In the early 1990 the range of serially produced medical devices for surgery, anaesthesiology, urology, dentistry, as well as laboratory glassware and other products comprised 120 items;

— In 1998 Medpolymer OJSC having purchased equipment, for the first time in Russia and the CIS has mastered the production of infusion solutions in polymer packaging (containers) with an estimated capacity of 7.5 million units a year, meeting current standards;

— In 2003, infusion solutions production output reached 10 million units per year;

— In 2007, the production of infusion solutions in polyolefin bags was mastered using the semi-automated equipment by Plumat Maschinenbau Vertriebs GmbH, Germany;

— A fully automated Plumat line was commissioned in 2012.

At present, the company continues to produce medical devices, however, manufacture of infusion solutions has become a priority.

Medpolymer OJSC is the largest manufacturer of infusion solutions in the North-West region in Russia. Currently the production capacity is over 35 million polymer bags of multilayer polyolefin film per year. The company productively cooperates with many research institutes, taking part in the development of new drugs.
